Pick a safe shelter before you work outside. When thunder starts, the outdoor job stops.

Before you head out

Check the local forecast. Choose your shelter and the route to it. A distant field needs a plan before a storm arrives.

When you hear thunder

Get to shelter right away. Do not finish the fence or go back for tools.

  1. Use a sturdy enclosed building with electricity or plumbing, or an enclosed car or truck with a metal roof and closed windows.
  2. Stay out of open sheds, under trees, and away from fences.
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going outside.

Try it with your family

Point to the shelter you would use from each work area. If you cannot reach one quickly, change the work plan.

Try the lesson: what would you do?
